Sharjah24 - WAM: A 50-centimeter tsunami hit an island south of Tokyo on Tuesday following a magnitude 5.9 earthquake in the area, Japan's weather agency said.
According to Kyodo News, the Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami advisory for the Izu and Ogasawara islands shortly after the temblor but lifted it at 11 am, determining that tsunami activity had sufficiently subsided. But it warned minor sea level changes may continue for about half a day.

The focus of the quake was located in waters near Torishima in the Izu island chain in the Pacific, about 10 kilometers underground.

The 50-cm tsunami was detected at 8:58 am at Hachijo Island, about 180 kilometers north of the quake focus, according to the weather agency. A 10 cm-tsunami was detected in Miyake Island.

No injuries have been reported so far, according to Tokyo police.

The agency had predicted tsunami waves of up to 1 meter and called on the public to stay away from coastal areas.

Despite the lifting of the advisory, the agency still warns against activities such as fishing, swimming, and other activities in water due to potential sea level changes.
