Sharjah 24 WAM: The Al Khatem Astronomical Observatory in Abu Dhabi has unveiled a striking image of the Thor's Helmet Nebula (NGC2359), as announced by the Astronomy Centre on Sunday. The nebula, located 15,000 light-years away in the Canis Major constellation, gets its name from its resemblance to the helmet of the mythical character Thor.
This emission nebula is in the pre-supernova stage, where stellar winds shape the surrounding gases into its distinctive helmet form. The nebula's expansion rate is between 10 and 30 km per second, suggesting it is between 80,000 and 240,000 years old.

The image, captured using a 14-inch telescope with filters for hydrogen, oxygen, and sulfur, is composed of 276 frames, each exposed for three minutes, totaling approximately 14 hours of exposure.
