Sharjah 24 – AFP: The European Union on Monday said four countries would send firefighters to Greece after it requested assistance to combat a massive wildfire burning through Athens suburbs.
"The EU civil protection mechanism was activated upon request of the Greek authorities," EU spokesman Balazs Ujvari said in a statement, adding that Italy, France, the Czech Republic and Romania were sending units to help.
France is sending 180 firefighters, 55 trucks and a helicopter to help Greece cope with raging wildfires, Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said Monday.
Thousands of people have fled their homes around Athens, including in the historic town of Marathon, as strong winds fanned a wall of wildfire flames closer to the Greek capital.
