Sharjah24: Her Excellency Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, President of American University of Sharjah (AUS), joined university student athletes from the UAE in celebrating their victories at the Intercollegiate Ramadan Sports Tournament 2024 awards ceremony on March 23, reaffirming AUS' dedication to supporting athletic endeavors and promoting a sense of unity and camaraderie within the student community.
Featuring competitions in basketball, volleyball and soccer over six thrilling days, the tournament showcased the talents of 544 student athletes, including 117 women and 427 men, encapsulating the spirit of athletic excellence.
The award ceremony was attended by guest of honor His Excellency Sheikh Rashid bin Humaid Al Nuaimi, Chairman of the Municipality and Planning Department in Ajman; His Excellency Eisa Hilal Al Hazami, Chairman of Sharjah Sports Council; Miralem Pjanić, Bosnian professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for UAE Pro League Sharjah Club and the Bosnia and Herzegovina national team.
Twenty-one universities from across the UAE participated in the tournament, including AUS, Canadian University Dubai, Rochester Institute of Technology Dubai, Skyline University College, Westford University College, Ajman University, American University in the Emirates, University of Birmingham Dubai, Heriot-Watt University Dubai, Gulf Medical University, University of Sharjah, University of Wollongong in Dubai, American University of Ras Al Khaimah, University of Stirling Ras Al Khaimah, Birla Institute of Technology And Science-Pilani (BITS Pilani), University of West London Ras Al Khaimah, Manipal University, Ras Al Khaimah Medical and Health Sciences University, Middlesex University Dubai, Success Point College and Al Qasimia University.
"The Intercollegiate Ramadan Sports Tournament 2024 has been an extraordinary showcase of talent and unity. Witnessing the dedication and sportsmanship displayed by these students has been truly inspiring. This tournament not only celebrates athleticism but also fosters a sense of belonging and camaraderie among our student community,” said Salim Mikati, Director of the Department of Student Athletics and Recreation at AUS.
In the men's basketball category, American University of Ras Al Khaimah clinched the first place, followed closely by AUS in second place, while Gulf Medical University secured the third place.
Rochester Institute of Technology emerged victorious in the men's volleyball, securing first place. Al Qasimia University claimed second place, with AUS closely trailing in third place.
In men's Soccer, AUS claimed first place with an outstanding performance. American University in the Emirates secured the second place, while Ajman University attained the third place.
In the women's categories, AUS showcased its dominance with wins in both volleyball and Soccer. AUS secured the first place in volleyball, while Middlesex University claimed the first place in basketball. In soccer, AUS Teams secured the first and second places respectively, further highlighting AUS' prowess in sports.
The tournament culminated with AUS emerging as the Overall Champions, a remarkable achievement that underscores the university's dedication to excellence in both academics and athletics.
AUS is recognized for its academic excellence and robust sports initiatives. With state-of-the-art facilities and a vibrant campus community, AUS places a strong emphasis on promoting health and fitness among its students through various sporting activities.
