Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed bin Sultan Al Qasimi has complimented the recent academic, scientific, and research accomplishments of the UOS. Throughout this time, the university has made steady strides in improving its teaching and learning resources.
He acknowledged the ongoing efforts to achieve greater success, acquire greater status in many international classifications, and focus on the quality of the learning process, aligning it with global advancements.
The President of the University of Sharjah praised the efforts of the Board of Trustees, university administration, academics, and personnel. Their efforts have helped to assist the university's uninterrupted development process in a variety of sectors, as well as achieving the strategic goals established.
During the meeting, the Board of Trustees examined a variety of issues relevant to reviewing the university's performance in the past and developing future objectives. The board made a number of decisions that benefit the university's interests.
The University of Sharjah's Board of Trustees approved the graduation of 1,709 male and female students who completed graduation requirements during the Summer 2022/2023 and Fall 2023/2024 semesters, including 46 in doctoral programmes, 226 in master's programmes, 2 in the Higher Diploma programme, and 1,435 in undergraduate programmes.
The university's Board of Trustees also authorised the creation of the Excellence Centre for Cancer at the Research Institute for Medical and Health Sciences. A board-member committee was constituted to design a localisation system for organising and sustaining academic and administrative jobs at the institution.
The Board also authorised the promotion of 25 academic members, including six professors and 19 associate professors. Furthermore, the Board approved the subcommittee recommendations, which included findings from the Compliance and Internal Audit Committees as well as an external auditor's report on the university's budget.
The Board of Trustees also approved the initiation of academic accreditation procedures for the Ph.D. programme in Space Science and Astronomy, the master's programme in Paediatric Dentistry, the Master of Arts programme in Organisational Practice, and the bachelor's programme in Special Education.
The Board reviewed a report by Prof. Dr Hamid Majul Al Nuaimi, Chancellor of the University of Sharjah, which included updates on the university's operations. The report covered the follow-up on implementing the 2019-2024 strategic plan, where the university achieved most of its indicators. Plans for improvement and evaluating the university's performance across all areas and activities were also discussed. Additionally, preparations for the 2024–2030 strategic plan were underway, focusing on increasing empowerment in academic and administrative positions and developing national staff across various fields, particularly academia and research.
The new strategy aims to elevate the university's ranking to be among the top 200 global universities, enhance collaboration opportunities with the industry sector, focus on applied and impactful research that reflects on society, achieve comprehensive digital transformation, embrace advanced technology, offer multidisciplinary programmes, and optimise student preparation and follow-up after graduation.
The report highlighted improvements in research performance, maintaining the university's top position in the country for scientific publications and citations in global databases and international university rankings. Furthermore, the university's academic programmes, the majority of which are nationally and internationally accredited, received recognition. Seventy-five percent of the programmes obtained international accreditation from reputable bodies. The university offers 127 academic programmes, with more than half being Ph.D. and master's programmes in various disciplines. Additionally, 28 programmes are currently in preparation.
The report emphasised the significant role of the Sharjah Academy for Astronomy, Space Sciences, and Technology, including the successful launch of the satellite Sharjah Sat-1 and the ongoing preparation for Sharjah Sat-2. The academy has also played a crucial role in providing training programmes, welcoming international candidates, and publishing scientific papers.
The report outlined the comprehensive procedures followed by the university to review and update academic programmes and courses, aligning them with the skills and competencies required by various sectors, including business and industry. The Board also reviewed the steps taken by the University of Sharjah to establish the branch of Al Dhaid as an independent university in the upcoming academic year.
The trustees, some visiting professors from foreign universities, and representatives from various departments all attended the meeting.
