Himid's first show in the area was a joint effort with the globally famous 'inner listening' practitioner Magda Stawarska that took many years to develop. The outcomes of their personal interactions may be seen in the four new commissions that are part of the show.
Plaited Time/Deep Water is conceptualised as a conversation between Sharjah's built environment, aural landscapes, and the emotions inspired by the city's closeness to the water. Himid's 'Zanzibar' (1998–2023) painting series takes centre stage in this exhibition, which features a new architectural and aural piece by Stawarska.
The island of Zanzibar is a place where tourists are urged to listen and remain, to experience the unfolding of memory via the five senses. In other works, found objects and boats of many shapes and sizes, each embodying a different dream, are brought to life as sculptural paintings, taking the viewer on a journey to create their own topography of the ocean.
Throughout the exhibition spaces, the artists' ongoing preoccupation with language and its possible materialisation is juxtaposed with investigations of daily practice. In Plaited Time/Deep Water, the personal archive is repaid via language, voice, and song by Sharjah's shifting light.
Sharjah Art Foundation Director of Collections and Senior Curator Dr Omar Kholeif are responsible for the show.
