In Cyprus no-man's land, owls come to the rescue of farmers

June 11, 2023 / 7:07 PM
Sharjah24 – AFP: In the buffer zone dividing Cyprus, farmers set up wooden boxes to nest barn owls whose presence has had a radical impact in driving away rodents that proliferated in the corridor in the absence of large amounts of human activity, destroying the farmers' crops.
"The owls are a miracle!", says farmer Christodoulos Christodoulou who first tried spraying poison on his fields.

Commenting on this, Nicolaos Kassini, wildlife service members, "The buffer zone is an area that not much human activity is being going on for decades. It's an area, in some parts of it, (where there) is a lot of rodent problems. Because it's mostly an agricultural area, I think it's an area that is an ideal project for a barn owl to be - the nesting box scheme - to be placed."
