Sharjah24 - WAM: Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Presidential Court, attended a government session to discuss the prospects of food security and development of a sustainable market for local products.
Held as part of the UAE Annual Government Meetings, the session featured Mariam bint Mohammed Almheiri, Minister of Climate Change and the Environment, and a group of top federal and local government officials representing ministries and agencies concerning with food production.
Mariam Almheiri affirmed that enhancement of national food security remains a key pillar of the UAE's vision to harness advanced technology and launch innovative initiatives to increase local food production.
‘’The UAE has launched a set of initiatives and programmes to make a radical transformation in methods to increase food security competitiveness and encourage local farms to adopt sustainable, competitive production,'' she added.
She said the government forward-looking strategy is to improve income of local farms and secure 50 percent of government food-related purchases from local farms by 2023 by boosting local farms' production capacities and encouraging and increasing investment in food sectors to 100 percent by 2030.
Participants discussed main challenges facing efforts to achieve food satisfaction from key commodities and strike a balance in the demand-supply equation.
