Sharjah24 – AFP: The oldest text in ancient Basque known to date has been discovered in the Spanish region of Navarra, inscribed on a bronze hand over 2,000 years old, regional authorities say.
Commenting on this, Maria Chivite, President of Navarra stated, "The 'Hand of Irulegi' is an important historical milestone. It is a leap like few others in the knowledge that, until now, we had of our history and our culture. We are seeing firsthand what were the uses and customs of something that until now had remained intact. "
The President of Navarra said, "This hand and the text written on it is the first direct testimony we have received from the Vascon people (considered ancestors of present-day Basques ed.) It is the first and so far the only time that we have had the opportunity to hear their voice directly. As I have said, the Irulegi hand is the oldest document in the ancient Basque language. Until now we thought that these settlers did not write, but now we know that they did, that they used a graphic system, as has already been explained, derived from Iberian and adapted to their language.
