The fight to save "The Queen" lagoon in Venezuela

November 14, 2022 / 9:07 AM
Sharjah24 – AFP: The environmental activists in Venezuela are exerting efforts to advance the urban development projects adjacent to "The Queen", lagoon about a hundred kilometres from Caracas, as the lagoon is being threatened by deforestation and pollution, contributing to enhance the preservation of the ecosystem.
Commenting on this, Darielbis Nieves, NGO's turistic guide said, "There are people who have been shocked to learn about all the things that our lagoon has to offer, they didn't know, because as children they were brought up with a culture that it wasn't worth anything. The mangroves here in our community were like wood, to produce houses, kiosks (for selling food), but that was all they thought of it."

Through the project 'A Crown for The Queen', funded by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Ecobrion activists fight against the advancement of constructions and promote environmental education.

Barbara Ordonez, founder of the NGO Ecobrion stated, "This is sustainability; using tourism to serve ecosystems by following their conservation, preservation, protection and ecological restoration."
