Sharjah24: During an inspiring and interactive workshop, children visiting the 41st Sharjah International Book Fair had the opportunity to learn about art basics, including colour mixing and creating 3D effects through simple and effective techniques via the Procreate app.
Presented by Grace Fawaz, a passionate art teacher, youngsters were shown the possibilities and power that the digital canvas can provide. “I chose to use Procreate in this workshop because it’s a great way to demonstrate real art techniques and concepts while being more forgiving than the traditional canvas, allowing beginners to learn the basics without the expenses of art supplies,” Grace explained.

The workshop began with a basic introduction to some of the tools of the app and with each participant equipped with an iPad and stylus, the eager students quickly became comfortable with selecting digital brushes and the colour pallet.

Expanding on the palette, Grace guided the class through primary and secondary colours with many students eagerly answering questions about colour mixing.

The workshop continued as children put “pen to pad” and experienced first hand about mixing colours, creating orange from red and yellow, impressing their teacher with their ability to navigate and use the digital canvas.

Moving swiftly along, students were taught about the additions of white, black and greys to create tints, shades and tones of the same colour and how using these techniques can help to create a “3D” effect in their drawings.

The interactive workshop concluded with the school kids grasping the concept of “masking objects” and then applying their newly found skills of shading and “gaussian blurs” to create the illusion of a sphere. Once again Fawaz was impressed with the speed at which the young students had grasped all the concepts congratulating them all on their artistic skills.
