Elon Musk teases 'useful' humanoid robot

October 04, 2022 / 9:45 AM
Sharjah24 – AFP: "We always want to be careful we don't go down the Terminator path," says Elon Musk as he shows off the latest version of a humanoid robot. An Optimus prototype wheeled on stage during an annual Tesla AI Day presentation was mounted to a small platform. The robot, which remains a work-in-progress, waves to the audience and raised its knees.
Tesla will begin testing Optimus on factory floors, doing simple tasks like carrying parts. The general public should be able to purchase the robots in three to five years.

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla Motors said, "You know, we always want to be careful we don't go down the Terminator path. I thought maybe we should start off with a video of the Terminator, starting off with the--you know, skull crushing. But people might take that too seriously. So, we do want Optimus to be safe, so we are designing in safeguards where you can locally stop the robot. "

Elon Musk continued, "The goal is to make a useful humanoid robot as quickly as possible and we've also designed it using the same discipline that we use in designing the car. Which is to say to design --from manufacturing such that it is possible to make the robot in high volume at low cost with higher liability so, that's incredibly important. "

He added, "There is still a lot of work to be done to refine Optimus and improve it obviously because this is just Optimis version one. And that's really why we are holding this event, which is to convince some of the most talented people in the world like you guys to join Tesla and help make it a reality. "

The CEO of Tesla Motors also pointed out, "This means a future of abundance; a future where there is no poverty, where people, you can have whatever you want in terms of products and services. It really is a fundamental transformation of civilization as we know it."

Elon Musk continued, "It's very important that I can't just do what I want. You know sometimes people think -- but, it's not true. So, it's very important that the corporate entity that makes this happen is something that the public can properly influence. So I think the Tesla structure is ideal for that."
