Argentines turn to bartering clothes and food to combat inflation

October 04, 2022 / 8:35 AM
Sharjah24 – AFP: Argentines gather in Buenos Aires' Plaza de Mayo for an improvised barter fair to exchange goods and protest high inflation and low wages.
"We are doing it so that the government can see the situation we are in, that the salary we have is not enough for anything", says Felix, a bartering participant. He added, "We are exchanging merchandise for clothes. Trainers for something newer or bigger. We are doing it so that the government can see the situation we are in, that the salary we have is not enough for anything."

This exchange method was very common in Argentina during the 2001 economic crisis.

He continued, "The idea is to exchange a packet of noodles for a piece of clothing. That would be the exchange. Now we do it with tickets, which are symbolic for us, because they have no value at a national level. They only have value for us, for those who barter."
