A total lunar eclipse occurs when the moon passes through the Earth's shadow. It appears red, which is known as a blood moon, because light is scattered through the Earth's atmosphere, much like during a sunset.

This supermoon takes the name of Super Blood Moon due to the moon being at its closest point to Earth in its orbit.
