Sharjah24 – AFP: World Health Organisation Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus praises South Africa for its "transparency" after identifying the Omicron variant, adding that "identifying variants should be rewarded, not punished", as he visits the mRNA Vaccine Hub for Africa in Cape Town.
Commenting on this, Tedros Adhanom, Director General of the World Health Organisation pointed out, "We're happy you detected it. That's transparency and as soon as the world tried to punish you, we said no, this behaviour should be rewarded, not punished. You know, identifying variants, reporting them immediately is a behavior that should be rewarded, not punished. And you have done really well. I think you followed the debate. The whole world itself, ultimately slowly but surely came to your side."
The Director General of the World Health Organisation continued, "As you know the MrNA technology is not just for COVID it will be for malaria, TB, HIV and the rest, it will be a game changer. And we expect this vaccine to be more suited to the context in which it will be used with fewer storage constraints, and at a lower price."
