Sharjah24 – Reuters: Dry land has emerged from the shallow waters of the Po River in Turin, following weeks of drought with no snow or rain.
The river, which is 652 km long and runs across the entire Po Valley from west to east, holds the record for the largest river basin in Italy, with approximately 71,000 square km of surface area.
"The Po has a flow rate of about 160 cubic metres per second, as opposed to the 360 cubic metres per second that is the average in historical measurements," explains general director of Regional Agency for Environmental Protection (ARPA), Angelo Roberto.
The prolonged drought may cause serious long-term damage to agriculture and raises the risk of forest fires even during the winter period.
