Sharjah 24 – KUNA: Fires that have been raging in some southern regions are spreading farther depriving this country, a top tourist attraction in the past, of large swaths of green sceneries.
Firefighters and civil defence personnel are trying to battle the blazes that have gained strength due to gale winds whipping a cluster of villages near the southern port city of Tyre, some 80 kilometers from the capital.
Official National News Agency reported that a big fire erupted in proximity of the town of Beit Meri, a renowned tourist resort in Mount Lebanon. The blazes spread threatening houses in the town.
The fires have destroyed many pine trees around Beit Meri, the civil defence directorate reported.
In northern Lebanon, the NNA also reported a fire around the town of Asia and residents appealed to the army to help put out the flames. In the northernmost region of Akkar, fires were also spreading reaching locations close to houses.
