Sharjah24: Engineer Nouf Wazir, responsible for projects engineering in the Energy Department of Bee’ah, stated that in 2017, Bee’ah contracted with Masdar to establish “Sharjah Waste-to-Energy Project”, as the idea of the project is to treat non-recyclable waste into usable energy. The agreement was signed with Sharjah Electricity, Water and Gas Authority (SEWA) , where the authority will receive the electricity that is produced from the station, and the project will be completed at the end of the year 2021. She affirmed that Bee'ah seeks to make Sharjah the first environmentally waste-free emirate.
In an exclusive statements to "Sharjah 24", Eng. Nouf confirmed that the project's capacity is 300,000 tons per year, approximately 800 tons per day, and it will produce an electrical energy of 30 megawatts, which is sufficient to power 28,000 homes. This project is considered the first of its kind in the Arab world and in UAE, as Bee’ah seeks, through the plant project, to close the landfill and turn it into an area for solar panels
Nouf Wazir added that the mechanism of Bee’ah’s work with waste in the beginning is by sorting waste into recyclable waste and sent to factories for recycling, and non-recyclable waste is sent to a waste-to-energy plant, noting that Bee’ah treats 3 million tons of waste in year and each type of waste is processed in a different factory.
