Venezuela's Maduro accuses U.S. of "kidnapping" extradited envoy

October 18, 2021 / 8:25 AM
Sharjah24 – Reuters: Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro lambasted the U.S. for "kidnapping" an envoy who was extradited from Cape Verde to face an American court.
""It was a sad day, and one of indignation because the American empire (reference to the U.S.A.) violated all international rights and took a Venezuelan diplomat," Maduro said during a meeting on Sunday (October 17, 2021)

The U.S. Justice Department charged Saab in 2019 in connection with a bribery scheme to take advantage of Venezuela's state-controlled exchange rate.

The United States also imposed sanctions on him for allegedly orchestrating a corruption network that Washington says allowed Saab and Maduro to profit from a state-run food subsidy program.

Saab's lawyers have called the U.S. charges "politically motivated."

Saab is expected to make his initial court appearance on Monday (October 18) in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida.
