Dozens injured in Tokyo earthquake

The Japan Meteorological Agency on Friday put the Thursday evening quake at a magnitude of 5.9, after initially reporting it was 6.1.

The quake caused a temporary pause in operations of some high-speed trains and underground rail networks, said dpa international.

There were also reports of burst water pipes and homes in Tokyo and surrounding areas swaying due to the quake.

The earthquake struck in Tokyo's neighbouring Chiba prefecture at a depth of 75 kilometres, according to the meteorological agency.

Japan is one of the most earthquake-prone countries in the world.
