"We're aware of the missile launch, and we're consulting closely with our allies and partners," Pentagon Spokesperson John Kirby told reporters in a press briefing Thursday.
"We've assessed that this event does not pose an immediate threat to US personnel or territory or to our allies." Kirby, however, noted that the missile launching highlights the destabilising impact of the North Korean illicit weapons programme.
He also affirmed that the US is committed to the alliance with both Japan and South Korea.
Meanwhile, Commander of US Northern Command Glen Vanherck pointed out that the intelligence community is still making an assessment of the North Korean claim.
The North Korean official news agency (KCNA) has reported that the army test-fired the hypersonic Hwasong-8 missile on Tuesday morning.
It announced that the new missile was developed by the North Korean Academy of Defense
Science.
It claimed that the test results proved that all the technical specifications met the design requirements.
