Sharjah24 – AFP: Sri Lanka imposed price controls on key foods Friday as the government stepped up the use of emergency powers to counter shortages.
Queues formed outside state-run supermarkets even before they opened to sell sugar seized from private dealers at new prices less than half of what was being charged on the open market on Thursday.
Commenting on this, Wijeratne, Sri Lanka resident pointed out, "This is a good thing by the government (to impose price control). I am hoping to buy at reduced prices. I don't know how much I will be allowed to buy, but if I can get even a kilo or two of sugar, it is a great thing under current circumstances."
