Gazan engineers create firefighting robot from scrap

August 28, 2021 / 4:18 PM
Sharjah 24 – AFP: Gazan engineers use a robot they’ve created from auto parts and other trash to handle dangerous remnants of war and extinguish fire, as they face shortage of raw materials due to the Israeli blockade.
Ahmed Mokbel, Engineer, involved in the robotics industry, said "We started by making small, simple robots before creating this advanced robot. It can carry out a number of functions - it has a front limb, a hose and a remote-controlled arm. This robot can carry heavy objects and handle suspicious items."

"We have faced a number of difficulties in the robotics industry in the Gaza Strip such as the blockade of the Strip, the lack of material and funding and limited capibilities," Engineer Mokbel added.

He continued that most of the parts used in the making of the robot come from other devices and from cars.

"This robot costs between eight to ten thousand dollars. It is cheap compared to what other robots would cost in developed countries - those would usually cost around hundreds of thousands of dollars. But we have had to confront the impossible and managed to create this robot with limited capabilities," Mokbel concluded.
