Virus surge in Guadeloupe turns hospital into disaster medicine

August 07, 2021 / 10:29 AM
Sharjah24 - AFP: An influx of Covid-19 patients in the intensive care unit of a Pointe-à-Pitre hospital on the French Caribbean island of Guadeloupe has turned hospital care into "disaster medicine," says Marc Valette, the head of ICU. Guadeloupe faces a fourth coronavirus wave, prompting the hospital to send at least two patients to Paris.
Marc Valette, head of ICU at Guadeloupe university hospital said, "Unfortunately, this has turned into disaster medicine, and we saw the wave grow over the past few days and we knew we would follow Martinique, which is experiencing a horrific situation. And we saw things speed up over the last 24 hours at the hospital, particularly in the ICU. We had to take in 10 patients in the Covid ICU yesterday as other departments were overwhelmed."
