Sharjah 24 – KUNA: Japan reported 4,668 new cases of the coronavirus over the past 24 hours on Friday, raising the nation's total number to 859,868, the health ministry and local authorities said.
The country's cumulative death toll rose by seven to 15,111. Tokyo added 1,359 new infections, which brought the total cases in the Japanese capital to 196,400.

The tallies exclude those who were linked to a virus-hit cruise ship in February 2020.

Tokyo and southern prefecture of Okinawa are currently under a state of emergency over the COVID-19.

The emergency will cover the two-week period of the Tokyo Olympics starting Friday.

The organisers have said no spectators will be allowed at Olympic venues in the Tokyo metropolitan area as well as Fukushima Prefecture in northeastern Japan.
