Sharjah24 – AFP: British Health Secretary Matt Hancock says during a Downing Street briefing that the Indian coronavirus variant now comprises up to three quarters of new virus cases in the UK, as the government attempts to keep local outbreaks under control. Hancock also responds to accusations made by former top adviser to the prime minister Dominic Cummings that he did not follow through on a promise made last year to test all care home patients coming back from hospital.
Commenting on this, Matt Hancock, British Health Secretary said, "The latest data show that the number of cases of coronavirus are rising. Yesterday we saw 3,542 new cases, the highest since the 12th of April."
He added, "The variant first identified in India, so called B1617.2, is still spreading, and the latest estimates are that more than half, and potentially as many as three quarters of all new cases are now of this variant." “Of the 49 people who are in hospital with Covid in Bolton, only five have had both vaccine doses," he continued.
commenting on allegations made by Dominic Cummings regarding care home testing, The British Health Secretary pointed out, “But my recollection of events is that I committed to delivering that testing for people going from hospital into care homes when we could do it. I then went away and built the testing capacity for all sorts of reasons and all sorts of uses including this one. And then delivered on the commitement that I made."
