Sharjah 24: Brownies, Guides, and Senior Guides (7-25 years) had an opportunity to connect with their inner artist at Spring Camp 2021 themed “Artists in a Mission”, a 5-day art retreat virtually organised by Sharjah Girl Guides (SGG). It was a welcome break for the young members from their school routine and offered them an opportunity to relax and express a bigger mission which is raising awareness towards UN Sustainable development goals, their impact and what they can do towards them.
During the first few days of the retreat, a series of workshops and interactive sessions led by experienced artists in the UAE to enabled participants to get acquainted with art equipment and draw characters based on researching body language and facial expressions. As they gained confidence, the girls were taught to develop characters that fit a storyline, which they followed with storyboarding to chart the characters’ progress.

They were also offered an introduction to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the UAE’s role in working towards attaining them. In an interesting exercise that followed, participating SGG members picked one SDG each, and offered their creative interpretation of it through artistic sketches.

The members learnt how to express themselves via process-oriented art which is based on exploration and allows different outcomes rather than emulating a pre-conceived finished product. They also developed a better understanding of the key role of art in highlighting important issues related to society and development, and how they can employ their art to convey their thoughts on UN sustainable goals.
