Sharjah24 – AFP: The president of the European Council and the WHO's Director General push for a new international treaty to prepare for the next global pandemic -- and avoid the the scramble for vaccines hampering the Covid-19 response. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES of a virtual WHO press conference.
Commenting on this, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director General said, "The time to act is now, the world cannot afford to wait until the pandemic is over to start planning for the next one. We must not allow the memories of this crisis to fade and go back to business as usual."
He added, "This treaty would strenghten the implementation of the international health regulations and critically it would also provide the framework for international cooperation and solidarity."
Charles Michel , president of the European Council stated, "The next pandemic is not a question of if but when so we must be ready and we have no time to waste. This treaty on pandemics would be rooted in the constitution of the World Health Organization, it will support the principle of health for all and through this treaty, our main goal is to foster a comprehensive approach to better predict, prevent and respond to pandemics."
