'No safety concerns' for vaccine use in pregnant women - WHO

March 25, 2021 / 6:55 AM
Sharjah24 – Reuters: An expert from the World Health Organisation (WHO) said on Wednesday (March 24) there were no safety concerns for pregnant women to get vaccinated against COVID-19 based on the available data.
WHO maternal and perinatal expert Dr Ozge Tuncalp said many COVID-19 shots available are mRNA vaccines, which means "there is no specific reasons to believe that there will be safety concerns over vaccination of pregnant women."

Messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccines work by inserting synthetic mRNA that instructs cells to make a pathogen's proteins or protein bits, spurring the immune system into action.

She added that those who are at high-risk of exposure to COVID-19 "may be vaccinated if they chose to do so."

Tuncalp says the recommendations apply to Janssen, AstraZeneca, Pfizer BionTech and Moderna vaccines, all approved by WHO.
