Sharjah24 - KUNA: Japan reported 5,319 new cases of the coronavirus over the last 24 hours Wednesday, raising the nation's total number to 300,414, the health ministry and local authorities said.
The country's cumulative death toll rose by 71 to 4,189. Tokyo added 1,433 new infections, which brought the total cases in the Japanese capital to 78,566.
The tallies exclude those who were linked to the virus-hit Diamond Princess cruise ship in February. Amid a resurgence of coronavirus infections in the Tokyo metropolitan area, the government last week declared a state of emergency for Tokyo, Saitama, Chiba and Kanagawa prefectures. Under the declaration, effective until February 7, residents in the designated areas are encouraged to refrain from nonessential outings after 8:00 p.m. Restaurants and other establishments are also asked to close by 8:00 p.m. The government said it is also set to expand the state of emergency in seven morel prefectures including Osaka, Kyoto and Fukuoka later in the day.
