Netflix refuses to add fiction warning to 'The Crown'

December 08, 2020 / 8:27 AM
Sharjah24 – Reuters: Netflix has rejected calls from Britain to warn viewers that this is fiction.
The latest season of its hit series ‘The Crown’ has attracted criticism for its portrayal of the royal family.

In particular, scenes suggesting that the late Princess Diana was treated coldly or even cruelly by senior royals.

Britain's culture minister Oliver Dowden asked for disclaimers at the start of each episode.

According to a government source he wrote to the U.S. streaming service saying the series was "a beautifully produced and acted drama but Netflix should be very clear it is a work of fiction."

Netflix responded saying it has "no plan" to add a disclaimer and added: "We have always presented 'The Crown' as a drama - and we have every confidence our members understand it's a work of fiction that's broadly based on historical events."

Dowden is among several prominent British figures arguing the series risks giving viewers a wrong and damaging impression.
