Sharjah24 - WAM: His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the President of the United Arab Emirates, and Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the Prime Minister of Greece, met today to talk about ways to improve cooperation between the two countries and the possibility of a stronger strategic partnership. During their conversations, a number of regional and international issues of relevance were raised.
The meeting took place as part of official negotiations between the two parties at the Greek Ministerial Council's headquarters in Athens.
Mitsotakis welcomed President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed's visit at the start of the meeting, emphasising his belief that the visit will advance bilateral relations.
The two sides also talked about ways to work together more, especially in the areas of economics, investment, development, the environment, and food security.
They discussed recent regional and international developments of mutual concern, emphasising their shared commitment to finding peaceful solutions to the region's crises and the need to promote international security and stability.
His Highness President Sheikh Mohamed expressed his delight at visiting Greece and expanding bilateral relations between the two nations, stressing the necessity of building on the agreements and Memorandums of Understanding (MoU) inked by both parties.
He also emphasised the need to strengthen their collaboration in solving shared concerns like the economy, trade, food security, and climate change.
His Highness Sheikh Mohamed thanked Mitsotakis for inviting the UAE to be the Guest of Honour at the 86th edition of the Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF), which will take place from September 10th to September 18th, 2022. The UAE is the first Arab country to be invited as a guest of honour to the event, which dates back to 1926 and is considered the oldest international trade show.
His Highness Sheikh Mohamed said that the UAE will send a delegation of more than 40 public and private organisations to the event. This shows that the two countries have been close for a long time and want to deepen and strengthen their ties.
During the meeting. Sheikh Mohamed invited Mitsotakis to the 28th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP28) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), which will be held in the UAE in 2023.
On that front, Sheikh Mohamed reiterated the UAE's commitment to being an active international player in climate action, expressing the country's willingness to welcome the world at COP28 in order to make real progress in this field by developing a comprehensive methodology to mitigate the effects of climate change.
Mitsotakis lauded the UAE's significant efforts to maintain regional and international security and peace, as well as to promote tolerance and moderation, stressing Greece's desire to enhance bilateral ties with the UAE.
The two countries announced a €4 billion joint investment fund during Mitsotakis' trip to the UAE in May 2022. They also talked about the results of the UAE-Greece Business Forum, which was attended by over 50 Greek organisations from the public and private sectors and over 20 leading Emirati companies.
They urged the private sectors in both countries to participate in joint ventures and in the implementation of the strategic partnership's objectives, and they affirmed the need to explore new ways of increasing trade while emphasising the importance of the private sector in advancing bilateral economic ties.
At the conclusion of the meeting, the two sides reiterated their desire to strengthen relations between the UAE and Greece, as well as diversify the foundations of their overall strategic partnership related to the process of sustainable development and their respective national economies, while noting their shared views on promoting tolerance, coexistence, and cooperation among communities, particularly during times of crisis.
They then underlined the importance of supporting efforts to find a political and peaceful solution to Yemen's crisis, based on a Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) proposal and its conclusion on national discussion, as well as relevant United Nations (UN) Security Council resolutions.
They also reaffirmed their countries' disapproval of terrorist groups' operations and assaults.
