Sharjah24 – AFP: A Beijing bakery has introduced a biscuit making challenge in its store as it seeks to cash in on the massive popularity of the Netflix show "Squid Game".
For 58 RMB (9 USD) customers can pretend to be a character in the smash-hit show by taking part in the biscuit making challenge. The activity involves trying to convert a mixture made up of sugar and baking soda into neatly shaped biscuits.

There is no penalty for failure and no prize for success unlike in the TV show which is famous for the brutal penalty of death that eliminated contestants face.

The bakery's owner, herself a big fan of the show, told Reuters on Saturday (October 16) that the aim is to offer fellow fans a safe and fun way to get involved.

"Our customers are mainly young people and young people make up many of this show's fans", said Hao Jing, owner of the DIY Bakery & More store.

Since Hao's store added the challenge to its menu of different cake and dessert making activities, around 20 customers or pairs of customers have taken part. Though that may not sound like much, on Saturday several of the Squid Game challenge participants also chose to bake cakes at the store.

Hao is also hopeful that as more people hear about this, and as more people watch the show in China, her bookings will increase even more.

"Squid Game", made in South Korea, is a nine-part thriller in which cash-strapped contestants play childhood games with a deadly twist in a bid to win 45.6 billion won ($38 million). The show became a worldwide sensation for Netflix when it was released in September.

Netflix is not available in China without a VPN, but many fans in China have still found ways to see it such as on the popular TV and film platform "Renren Shipin".
