Sharjah 24: The eighth annual International Photography Festival, Xposure, organised by Sharjah Government Media Bureau (SGMB), opened its doors to visitors today (Wednesday). Featuring over 200 events, including 66 workshops, the platform is offering a unique opportunity to attendees to master the art of photography, filmmaking and other visual media arts.
In the ‘Enlightened perspectives: A workshop on lighting photography’, Rob Irving, an experienced mentor in the realm of visual storytelling, shared priceless advice on how to develop an eye for a good photo. “It is really important to keep photography simple. Good photography excels because of its simplicity. We should always seek the simplest solutions,” he told his audience.

Irving emphasised the role of lighting and said it plays a pivotal role in a photograph. “Lighting sets the mood, conveys emotions, and delivers a specific message. It also creates the illusion of three dimensions in an image that is essentially two-dimensional. Often, we lay too much focus and importance on the subject, when the focus should always be on the light.”

Irving also conducted a workshop on smartphone photography.

In another workshop on DSLR Photography course, Roland Pokrywka, shared his experience on ‘Shutter speed mastery: Capturing motion and moments.’

“Editing can really enhance the pictures,” he said, adding that photographers should use manual mode while clicking pictures and save pictures in RAW mode to ensure better quality. Talking about shutter speeds, he advised the audience on how faster shutter speed equals short time which allows one to capture freezing motion.

Venerable photographer Andy Katz offered a masterclass in visual storytelling at a workshop titled ‘Your Journey in Photography’, encapsulating his experience of capturing images in all 63 American National Parks, and offering attendees a deep dive into his unique and nuanced art approaching subjects with finesse.

The first-ever Adobe Lab at Xposure was a hive of activity on the festival’s first day, hosting a sold-out 2-hour beginners workshop that introduced attendees to essential software skills and animation principles of Adobe After Effects, and taught them how to use the software as a powerful tool for creative expression.

Xposure 2024 is also running a three-day film competition.
