Khetsiwe Dlamini: UN supports UAE in women empowerment efforts

Sharjah24: Organised by the NAMA Women Advancement Establishment (NAMA) and United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women), the second Women’s Economic Empowerment Global Summit (WEEGS 2019) started in Sharjah on Tuesday under the patronage of Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Chairwperson of NAMA.
The summit was opened in the presence of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohamed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, as well as several high-ranking government and semi-government officials in the UAE, leading UN representatives, women’s empowerment advocates, business leaders, and decision makers.

On the sidelines of the summit, Sharjah24 met with Khetsiwe Dlamini, Chief of staff -UN woman, where she expressed her happiness for attending this summit:

“UN – Women is very happy to be at Sharjah today. And I am glad that it is happening here in the UAE, because UAE has an impressive improvements in the field of women economic empowerment to boast about.”

“Firstly, UAE has closed its gender gap by 64% in a very short time, it has increased its place in the indexes of gender equality, and it has a 70% female graduation rate,” she explained.

She added that the UAE aims to be amongst the top 25 countries in the world in the field of gender equality by 2021.

“We as UN – Women, through our partnership with Nama, are here to support that effort,” she concluded.
