Sharjah 24: The Sharjah Police Research Centre has organised an awareness seminar on online extortion that affects those who misuse social media sites. The seminar, which was orgnised as part of Sharjah Police’s participation in the 38th edition of the Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF 2019), being held at Expo Centre Sharjah, was attended by a number of Sharjah Police Academy’s teaching staff, students and a host of visitors.
The seminar, which was presented by Brigadier General Dr. Khalid Hamad Al Hammadi, Director of Sharjah Police Research Centre, aimed to communicate the leadership’s message to SIBF visitors to take caution when using modern social media platforms by not publishing their private data on those platforms so that they won’t fall victims of electronic extortion crimes. 

The seminar addressed several issues with focus on raising the level of security awareness among the audience.

During the seminar, Al Hammadi reviewed a study of the time span spent by social media surfers, and concluded that 5% of users spend between 5 minutes and 4 hours daily browsing social media sites.

The seminar also dealt with the methods of protecting children and adolescents from the risk of being subjected to electronic extortion. Al Hammadi advised children on the proper procedures to be followed in case any of them falls in the snare of online extortion.

Brigadier General Al Hammadi called on the audience to make optimal benefit from social media sites to enhance security and concepts of community values, disseminate the concepts of moderation and tolerance, and clarify the police efforts and their role in educating youth and community members about the dangers of deviant ideas, highlighting the dangers of rumours.
