SRTI Park highlights academic sector support of entrepreneurship

Sharjah 24: The Sharjah Research Technology and Innovation Park (SRTI Park) organised a session called “The Academic Lab” for Sharjah’s academic community, including deans and faculty members from various universities and colleges of the University City of Sharjah, to discuss the academia’s role in shaping Sharjah’s entrepreneurial ecosystem.
The session highlighted the vision of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohamed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, to develop and manage an innovation ecosystem that promotes Research and Development and supports enterprise activities and the triple helix collaboration of industry, government, and academia.

SRTI Park aims to provide students an environment conducive to innovation and creativity by creating an attractive and sustainable Park with integrated infrastructure and services to transfer and localize knowledge. The Park has collaborated with many research bodies and institutions and aims to become a regional scientific research center over the next few years.

Hussain Al Mahmoudi, CEO of SRTI Park, presented the vision and objectives of the Park that will support, encourage and develop an innovation system to enhance the status of the UAE as a global destination in the fields of research and technology.

Al Mahmoudi said: "We aspire to translate the vision of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohamed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, through this session in developing cooperation between the government, private and the academic sectors through applied research projects. It is important to have a strong relationship between the faculty, students and private companies. Many projects have been implemented in the Park, including the first 3D Printed House, and we aspire to find similar projects in many other sectors including transport. "

Al Mahmoudi stressed the importance of encouraging and activating the academic role represented by the faculty members and students to move scientific research from the theoretical stage to the applied practical stage and to make it a tangible reality through SRTI Park as all conditions are prepared and harnessing all the financial means to serve this goal. SRTI Park is a hub between academics and the private investment sector. He briefed the audience on developments in the Park, infrastructure projects and facilities, and progress in completing the construction and development processes of the Park. The attendees listened to a detailed explanation of the latest developments in the ongoing works, what has been accomplished and the projects to be launched in the future.

Roland Schatz, Founder and CEO of Media Tenor International, spoke during the session about the importance of cooperation between academic sectors with the private sector in order to promote applied scientific research to find solutions for many vital sectors. Schatz said that Sharjah was selected among the cities for the United Nations Development List by 2025. Through the efforts of the University City and SRTI Park, Sharjah will be an inspiration for the world that needs innovative solutions to reduce carbon emissions for a better future.

The session included an open discussion, networking and recommendations to promote a knowledge-based economy in Sharjah and the UAE.
