The Nikkei average rose 139.37 points, or 0.84 percent, to end at 16,683.93. On Monday, it dropped 209.46 points.
The Topix index closed up 13.38 points, or 1.00 percent, at 1,349.22, after falling 13.72 points the previous day.
The Nikkei plunged nearly 260 points in early trading, led by falls of export-oriented stocks and financial issues on the back of the yen’s firming against the dollar, brokers said.
Investors also took heart from media polls that a majority of respondents think Hillary Clinton beat Donald Trump in a debate for the U.S. presidential election in November, held on Monday.
